The Newbury and Thatcham Green Gym is an active, free voluntary group that combines staying fit with carrying out conservation work at various locations around the Newbury and Thatcham area of West Berkshire. Our volunteer members of the Green Gym learn and apply new outdoor skills alongside like-minded people. We are open to all ages and ability (although under 18’s need permission from a parent or guardian and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).

Each person is able to work at their own pace with task leaders on hand to offer guidance as necessary. There is no obligation to attend regularly. It’s a fun, active pastime, for you to take part in as often as it suits you.

At the Green Gym members help to maintain local conservation and recreation sites and take part in activities such as tree planting, vegetation and invasive plant clearance,  path creation and maintenance, restoring heathland and creating nature areas.

Join us at an event

We work at a variety of sites within easy driving distance of Newbury and Thatcham and our volunteers come from similar areas. If you think you would like to join us, why not come along to one of our events to see how much you like it. There is no membership fee to pay.  All tools and protective eyewear and gloves are provided. You will need to wear appropriate outdoor clothing and bring a drink with you, but we’ll provide biscuits. We stop for a break during the morning – a chance to socialise and enjoy refreshments.
